  • Our winner this week of the Hutt Bridge Club Fundraising Raffle is John Topp with Lucky number of 2. Congratulations John!
  • This Wednesday night’s session is hosting the graduation ceremony for our newest graduates. Come along and help celebrate. There will be supper and the bar will be open. All welcome.
  • Two special events are coming up this month:
  • Friday 22 September is our Friday Mix N Mingle. You can come solo on the day, organize to play with someone you haven’t played with before, OR come with a regular partner. All welcome. The bar will be open.
  • Saturday 23 September starting at 1 p.m. is our second In-House Fun Tournament for 2023. This is a multigrade event with nibbles and a complimentary drink. All members are welcome and there will be prizes for all grade combinations - from novice to open. If you are new to the game, this is a great tournament taster. Juniors and novices are free, thanks to a subsidy from the Ron Fisher Trust, other players are $10. If you want to play, please sign up on the notice board or if you want to play and need a partner, please contact Ruth.
  • Victoria Bridge Club is holding its Intermediate and Junior Tournament on Sunday 10 September and are looking for more players so if you are free why not play bridge and have a fun day.
  • There is no Saturday revision.

  • Our winner this week of the Hutt Bridge Club Fundraising Raffle with lucky number 16 is Vil Gravis again. Congratulations Vil.
  • Well done to our five winning Interclub teams on Friday night:
    Open Restricted captained by Madeleine Askew, Intermediate teams captained by Kathryn Badcock, Neil Sargisson and Trish Mahoney, and the Junior team captained by Bernice.
    The next round is on 15 September.
  • Congratulations to Phil Revell and Ruth Brucker for winning the Karori Open and
    Congratulations to Doug O’Halloran and Angela Duthie for being the best Intermediate Junior pair at the Upper Hutt Multi-Grade Tournament.
  • A reminder about health and hygiene protocols.
    Last week’s news from the government removing all Covid-19 restrictions increases the responsibility each of us has to be considerate towards our fellow members at the bridge table. Many of us are older, some with vulnerable health. So, please stay home if you are unwell with anything contagious including Covid and other cold & flu symptoms. At the Club, please wash and dry those hands and/or use the sanitizer provided, sneeze or cough into your elbow or a tissue to then be disposed of, and use the biscuit tongs provided. Wear a mask if you need extra protection.

  • Our winner this week of the Hutt Bridge Club Fundraising Raffle with lucky number 8 is AJ. Congratulations AJ!
  • Vil Gravis’ Development Group starts on Monday September 11 at 7pm. Vil will soon be selecting a development group of keen Junior, Intermediate and prospective Open Players to take part in a 10 Session Course. Cost $100 for the course. Everyone who is interested in taking part will be considered, with first preference given to PAIRS who wish to establish a regular partnership. Individuals who wish to take part but do not have a regular partner will be matched with someone of a similar standard, where possible. Individuals who cannot be matched with a partner, or do not want to be, are welcome to pay for the course to attend as spectators and take part in analysis and discussion. If you are keen to take part, please register your interest with Ruth or email or talk to Vil by Friday 1 September.
  • Our defibrillator is available for use if required. We are organising training for some members but in the meantime please follow the straightforward instructions inside the box. Thanks to our very generous members who have funded this.

  • HBC Intermediate Tournament this Sunday sponsored by Rymans- It’s not too late to enter! All entries are welcome.
  • Upper Hutt Multigrade Tournament Sunday 13 August - support our sister club!
  • Hutt Bridge Club Fundraising Raffle - the first draw is this coming Saturday. Numbers 4 14 35 are still available. Get in quick! Please let Ruth know if you want a number.
  • Madeleine Askew and Kathryn Badcock are running some ad-hoc mini-improver lessons. The lessons are free and the first one on transfers is on Wednesday the 9th August at 6pm.
  • Friday’s quiz was a great evening with quizmaster Toni Kane, with a varied and interesting format. $1040 was raised with the winning team being Team Number Three led by Ralph Robertshawe. Thanks to Toni, Kathryn Badcock who organized the event, and barman Paul Badcock, and to all those club members who donated prizes and helped in other ways. And do you know what hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia means - the fear of long words!
  • Thursday night Swiss Pairs starts on the 10th of August - you need to register for this event. The signup sheet is on the notice board.

  • Congratulations to our five winning Interclub teams on Friday night:
    Open Restricted captained by Madeleine Askew, Intermediate teams captained by Kathryn Badcock, Trish Mahoney, and the Richardson team, Junior team captained by Toni Kane. Well done! The next round is on 18 August.

  • Quiz with Toni Kane this Friday night at 7 pm!
    It's not too late to form a team and get your entry at $15 per person. Fun for a good cause!
    If you would like to be part of a team, you could let Ruth know and she may be able to magic one up.

  • Hutt Bridge Club Fundraising Raffle
    Most numbers are now sold, but there’s still room for some more punters. The first draw takes place on Saturday, August 5. Buy your lucky number for a year, six months, a quarter, or a month. Consider chipping in with some others to secure your number! Please contact Ruth to buy your lucky number.
  • The Committee has decided to increase our bar prices. Wine or beer will now be $6 and non-alcoholic will be $4. This is to ensure we cover our (rising) costs and is in line with what other organizations are doing. These increases will take effect from quiz night this Friday.

  • Matariki bridge was a big success and was enjoyed by all. A big thank you to Doug O’Holloran and Chris Pihema for organising and sponsoring the day.
  • Interclub is on this Friday. The link will be emailed out to the captains.
  • Next Monday afternoon the 24 July is a Mix Mingle session and everyone is welcome. This is a good opportunity to try playing at a different session or to play with a different partner, perhaps a new member.
  • We have our Intermediate tournament coming up on the 6th of August. Please sign up on the notice board. If you could help with baking and if you are not playing and have a free hour to help, please put your name on the sheet on the notice table.

    It works like this! There are 40 numbers - each number costs $5 per week. At the end of each week, one lucky number will win $100. The winning number will be whatever the BONUS number is in the Saturday lotto draw. This can be easily verified by all. The other $100 raises funds for the Club.
    The first draw will take place on Saturday, August 5. Buy your lucky number for a year ($260), $130 for six months, $65 a quarter, or $20 to $25 a month depending on the number of weeks. Unallocated numbers will be sold week to week.
    If you want to buy a number, please contact Ruth. Numbers will be on sale from 26th June.

It is a beautiful pounamu and sterling silver necklace and bracelet, made and donated by one of our members and all proceeds will go to the club. The tickets are $5 each and it will be drawn at our Matariki bridge session, Friday the 14th of July. Only 22 tickets left - get in quick!

  • Improver Online Classes - these are suitable for anybody who knows the basics of the game and is wanting to gain some confidence with conventions or general card play. Sessions are held Tuesday evenings and Wednesday afternoons, starting this week, using a mix of Zoom and RealBridge. $6 per session and you can pick and choose which ones you want to attend.
